Wicked Character List

In all my months writing about Wicked the Musical, I have never come across such an innovative way to produce a vast description of the characters in Wicked and their growth from Gregory Maguire’s story to the one we are all familiar with in the film “The Wizard of Oz.”

The Wicked Witch of the West: An instant outcast for her green skin, Elphaba slowly acquires the trappings of witchdom throughout the first act - the magic, the hat, the broom, even the flying monkeys. But as for the wicked part, well, that’s pure propaganda, because she’s willing to fight the power (”Defying Gravity” is her big showstopper). The role was originated on Broadway by Idina Menzel, who also starred in the original production of “Rent.”

Glinda: A mispronunciation of Galinda, the perky blonde at Shiz U who’s still good, but a little bit witchier than we remember her from the classic movie. She takes a dislike to Elphaba but has a change of heart, giving her a makeover during her signature tune, “Popular.” The original Glinda was Kristen Chenoweth, who moved on to Hollywood with roles in “The West Wing” and the recent film comedy “Four Christmases.”

The Wizard: Oz’s scheming tyrant, who’s responsible for the oppression of the kingdom’s talking animals. The legendary Joel Grey originated the role on Broadway.

The Cowardly Lion: We meet him as a cub in a cage. Elphaba breaks him out because she learns that cages keep magical animals from learning how to talk. “Wicked” also serves up creative origin stories for the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman, but revealing those would spoil things.

Dorothy: As for little Miss “Over the Rainbow,” her house still kills the Wicked Witch of the East - Elphaba’s sister - but she doesn’t even get onstage. Instead, she’s just a faceless pawn manipulated by forces she can’t possibly understand. And is that how the current generation views its parents? Sorry, Judy!

I love it and Wicked tickets!

Roscioli making her Broadway debut as the green-faced Elphaba

Roscioli Will Fly Into Broadway's Wicked July 21

Dee Roscioli, who starred in the Chicago production of Wicked, will join the cast of the Broadway production of that Stephen Schwartz-Winnie Holzman musical July 21 at the Gershwin Theatre.

Roscioli will be making her Broadway debut as the green-faced Elphaba. She will join a cast that includes Alli Mauzey as Glinda, Tony Award winner Rondi Reed as Madame Morrible, P.J. Benjamin as The Wizard, Kevin Kern as Fiyero, Alex Brightman as Boq, Cristy Candler as Nessarose and Timothy Britten Parker as Dr. Dillamond.

Dee Roscioli played Grizabella in the national tour of Cats and has appeared in workshops of Dangerous Beauty and Behind the Limelight.

Based on Gregory Maguire's novel, which turned every Oz myth inside out, Wicked explores the early life of the witches of Oz: Glinda and Elphaba. The two main characters meet at Shiz, a school where both hope to take up sorcery. Glinda is madly popular and Elphaba is, well, green. By a misunderstanding, they wind up roommates and, after an initial period of mutual loathing, begin to learn something about each other. Their life paths continue to intersect through a shared love, entry into the Emerald City and interaction with the Wizard himself. Eventually, their choices and convictions take them on widely different paths.

Wicked is performing at Tulsa OK

Wicked is performing at Tulsa Performing Arts Center in Tulsa, OK for four weeks. The show is presented by Celebrity Attractions and will perform 32 times, though August 9th. For many reasons, except for the most obvious, “Wicked” is seriously green. Except for the environmental term, Wicked’s main character Elphaba, later known as the Wicked Witch of the West, is a green color from the time of her birth (we learn as to why her color is the way it is at the end of the story) and the fact that the play has grossed the largest amount in comparison to any other American theater work. More than 17 million international audiences have seen the four North American and fourth international companies perform the show, resulting in $1.35 billion in ticket sales and more than $100 million in memorabilia.

Wicked will perform at 7:30 Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday, 8pm on Friday, 2 & 8pm on Saturdays, 2 & 7:30 no Sunday with a special matinee on July 16th at 1:30 and a hearing impaired version on August 2nd’s matinee. Wicked tickets remain hard to come by, so act quickly! The best seats can be found on the weekday performances and Sunday evenings.

Enjoy Wicked The Musical.

‘Wicked’ Stars Worldwide

Former “Wicked” star Shoshana Bean may be in Vegas performing with the Peepshow cast, but she’s still got a lot of “Wicked” in her, as this week she performed with friend and composer Scott Alan, who recently released the album “Keys,” which Bean helped to promote. “I’ve defintely gotten lucky in my own career, but I remain a huge fan of all the great people I now get to work with. A few years ago I worked with someone I really admired and it was a terrible, miserable expereicne. So I made a pact with yself to only work with good people whom I admire and who treat me well in return.” The star is talking about working with people like Kerry Ellis, sutton Foster of Shrek and Megan Hilton of 9 to 5. The new star traveled to San Francisco for the first time to work at The Rrazz Room at Hotel Nikko where he’ll meet resident casts of Wicked. The singer has always been close to Wicked stars, like when he was suppossed to work with Eden Espinsoa, a Wicked member who should have been been on his last album; though she pulled out at last minute, it all worked out for the best.

Wicked in San Antonio TX

Wicked is performing at Majestic Theatre in San Antonio, TX. The national tour of “Wicked” came for the first time to the Majestic Theatre and Glinda, played by Katie Rose Clarke, knows that each night she gets to open up to a audience full in her favor.

From the concept of the film “Wizard of Oz,” Glinda flys through the stage in a clear bubble that has everyone cheering - “it’s pretty awesome; it doesn’t get old,” she says. “I’m not a huge fan of heights. You’re up 20, 30 feet in the air. It’s a narrow space, really high up. It took a lot of deep breathing and praying to calm myself down (at first). Now i’m so used to it; it’s kind of fun.”

Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, that it’s about this strong relationship between two female characters who help each other grow and become close and go through problems and life changes, and how they come through it as friends at the end,” Clarke continued “That’s a very fun dynamic.” If you want to catch these characters live and in action, Get your Wicked tickets today!

Wicked Majestic Theatre San Antonio, Texas

The Majestic Theatre in San Antonio, Texas is currently enjoying the Wicked run as flying monkeys soar through the stage, witches cackle at every turn and a dragon constantly exhales smokes and bubbles from his deep and dark mouth.

The play is based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel which tried to understand the backgrounds of the two witches that make up the story of Dorothy - the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch, Glinda. Maguire gave the Wicked Witch of the West a first name, Elphaba, that tips itself to the original writer of Oz L. Frank Baum, and took to the history of Oz. Though the majority of Wicked doesn’t meet up with “Wizard of Oz’s” story until the very end, which the play mostly recalls the 1939 film set more than the novel, but for those fans many Wizard of Oz questions are ansowered including “How did the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow come to be in such a state? Where did that green skin come from? Etc…If you want to see the show while playing at the Majestic Theatre, from Tuesdays-Friday, 2 and 8pm, Saturdays 2 and 7:30pm and Sunday check out Wicked tickets from Wicked The Musical Tickets Online.

Even Glinda the Good Witch, also known as Katie Rose Clarke, who recently graduate from the Sam Houston Stative college in her native Texas. “When it came out, I never imagined that someday I would be playing the role of Glinda. I remember I was really taken by the music and story. I knew I loved it,” she said during promotions for the show. While Clarke was still in school the show debuted and now she takes on the role of Glinda, the Good Witch who is always sparkly, positive and popular. “She was, of course, beautiful,” Clarke says about her character. “Everybody loves her.” But she would surprise many when she reveals that it wouldn’t be so bad to take on the task of green one day - “I love my role, [but] it woudl be fun to do the green witch once. I’m not sure I could sing it.”

Stephen Schwartz wrote the music and lyrics with book help from Winnie Holzman to turn Gregory Maguire’s best selling novel from 1995 to the Broadway stage. Wicked Makes Gershwin Theatre Top

Though the top rank was taken from them for just a few weeks, the Gershwin Theatre regained their number one position this week as the number one venue ranking for the week ending in Sunday, May 10th. According to TicketNews’ exclusive ranking systems, it was a close race with all the NBA and NHL playoffs that are happening this week, but the Gershwin Theatre took the gold due to one slight factor - Wicked. The Broadway hit musical that has been touring the nation helped take the Gershwin Theatre to the lead in both TicketNews’s Top Broadway Events and Top Theatre Events, with a score of 2.99.

TicketNews Exclusive Rankings and Power Scores are based on ticket sales for venues from the TicketNetwork Exchange™, the world’s largest secondary market exchange. A Power Score illustrates a given venue’s category-specific significance. Two factors are used to calculate a power score: total ticket sales for a venue, and total ticket sales within the category. As such, power scores should only be used to compare venues within a particular category. If you want to see the show at the number one theatre this week get Wicked ,Gershwin Theatre tickets today.

Wicked vs Amedican Idol

We all know that American Idol is popular. But for the theatre fans, the truth is that Wicked The Musical remains at the top no matter which elimination is up next. The musical prequel to the “Wizard of Oz” had a 6.30 power score according to TicketNews’s Weekly Top Events for the week that ended on May 17th. The musical shot to the top even when competing with American Idol Live’s score of 4.51 and the New York Yankees’s 2.51. The rest of the list is dominated by sports events, as the baseball season is just getting in gear again, while playoffs and elimination season is in the air for the rest of the categories - but still, Wicked tickets and performances remained at the top for the sheer wit and character of Gregory McGuire’s The show acquired the top spot for all “combined events,” while “American Idols Live Tickets” made the Top Concert Events and “New York Yankees Tickets” the Top Sports Events.

Why Wicked The Musical?

Wicked The Musical is incredibly popular for many reasons, most of which have to do with the excellent direction, production, design and acting that audiences are treated to when they attend the show. However there are many other elements of the show that are incredibly appealing to audiences of a wide range of ages. One extremely popular theme that runs through the show has to do with the subversiveness of differences, which is most strongly presented in the character of Elphaba. Not only is our heroine’s skin green but her personality is very different from those around her. Her physical difference also makes her look look at the world and others in a way that is set apart from her peers.

As the young Elphaba begins to learn how to interpret her place in Oz, she also shows a remarkable ability to look at things in a way that is very much independent of the society that she grew up in. She does not simply accept what she is told as fact, but judges things based on her own experiences. As Wicked tickets continue to be incredibly popular, this unique and appealing theme that runs through the musical can easily be considered one of the greatest appeals that he story has to theater-goers.

Enjoy Wicked.

Witch Facts

Wicked has a lot to do with witches, so this Friday we’re going to give you the scoop on witches, historical, modern day and fictional. Enjoy:
Witch Facts:
* A male witch is actually considered a witch, not a warlock, by modern Wicca-style witches. No separate-but-equal here.
* While Satanists use the inverted pentagram enclosed in a circle, witches use the right-side-up pentagram, enclosed in a circle. These different symbols mean very different things. The four elements- air, fire, earth, water- are located below the fifth element- the creator. Typically, witches don’t worship Satan.
* 29 people were accused of being witches in the famous Salem Witch trials.
* Giles Cory, an 80-year old man who was accused of being a witch in Salem, was crushed to death for more than two days, until he finally died without having confessed to being a witch.
* Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from the Harry Potter series has four houses, Gryfindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin.
* Cate Blanchett portrays Galadriel, and elf witch, in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
